Whether you’re considering a $40,0000 geothermal heating and cooling system, or a $50 digital thermostat for your home’s furnace, the cost of “going green” adds up fast.

Fortunately, there are many great federal and state incentives available to homeowners and businesses who need a little help covering the costs of various green energy projects.

If you are considering environmentally friendly improvements to your home, business, or are considering an alternative fuel or hybrid vehicle, check out the Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (DSIRE) for a complete listing of current incentives available in your state.

State and federal programs offer incentives for solar, wind, geothermal, and even microhydro energy systems. Incentives are also available for insulation improvements, home energy audits, energy star rated appliances, and green building construction technologies like insulated concrete forms (ICF).

Incentives are available in the form of low interest loans, grants, rebates, and tax credits. Unfortunately, most states have limit budgets available for these incentives so you need to act quickly before your state’s allocated funds are gone.

DSIRE currently maintains green energy and energy efficiency incentives for the following states:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Colombia.
