Save Money, Eat Healthy: Make Your Own Bread!
March 22, 2008 · 7 comments
The other day I was checking up on one of my favorite blogs,
The Simple Dollar, and I ran across an old post for a
recipe for homemade bread. Trent, from the Simple Dollar notes that not only is it cheaper to make your own bread, but the bread is a lot healthier and more delicious than buying the mass produced loaves available in the supermarkets today; i certainly agree.
The directions seemed easy enough, so yesterday I decided to try the recipe out for myself and share my thoughts with you.
Never in a million years would I of thought that making one of the most basic foods could be so much fun. This may sound corny, but in the “got to have it now” world that we live in today, I found the time consuming process of making a homemade loaf of bread to be one of the most relaxing things I have done in a long time!
So how did it come out? Well, as you can see from the picture below, it looks like it came out OK. However, no picture can capture the deliciousness that came out of my oven yesterday afternoon following The Simple Dollar’s recipe. Enjoy!!
Here are the pictures:

Pretty cool! Although not having it sliced would be a hassle. They don’t say “the best thing since sliced bread” for nothing.
yeah, but now I get to determine the thickness of my slices!!
I’ve been meaning to try this… everyone keeps saying it is great!
We make our own bread and even go a step further and grind our own wheat berries. Not only does this save money, the taste is amazing. For health enthusiasts, I just did a post on soaked what bread on my Raw Milk Mama blog.
We’ve been making bread with our bread machine for years and it’s awesome. Also, most of the bread-making machines can make things like pizza dough and other un-cooked things that can be added to recipes. (for family make-your-own-pizza night)
There’s also many varieties of bread you can make by mixing your own things into the bread so it doesn’t get boring.
I love freshly made bread but it causes me too problems : I eat too much and put on weight, I eat too much and it ends up costing me more money!!

The first loaf that I made was all I ate that day! I couldn’t bring myself to eat anything else all day!!
When it was gone, I immediately baked another loaf!!
The second one lasted a little bit longer!
