Selling unwanted items in your home can be a great way to generate extra cash while improving your home’s functionality.
For the last two years, my wife and I have been considering selling a beautiful “executive” desk we bought for our home office. While the desk perfectly fit the décor of the room, it has become less and less functional as our young children have become more mischievous.
As our home office evolved into more of a “play room”, our expensive executive desk with glass doors quickly became a liability.
Knowing When to Cut Your Losses:
We paid a lot of money for that desk, and we both agreed that getting rid of it would be a shame.
On the other hand, we would recoup some of the cost when we sold it, and we would gain the benefit of a more functional living space.
For us, the desk had already lost its value (both in price and functionality); selling simply forced us to deal with these realities.
When it came down to it, selling the unwanted item would only add value to our lives and looking back on it we couldn’t be happier with our decision.
How to Sell Your Own Unwanted Items:
If you have unwanted items around your house you are considering getting rid of, Craigslist is a great way to sell them locally.
I’ve already written a great step by step tutorial on how to sell a car on Craigslist, and the same principles in that article can be applied for anyone looking to sell furniture, tools, sporting equipment, electronics, or other unwanted items.
eBay is another great resource for selling smaller items (items that are easy to ship), but if you have an active Internet community in your area, the free service Craigslist provides is hard to beat!
